All the fun of Limerick’s Sporting and Celebrity Fashion show in support of Limerick Youth Service
All the fun of Limerick’s Sporting and Celebrity Fashion show in support of Limerick Youth Service
Some of Limerick’s most well-known folks about town and sporting personalities are all coming together to put on some rather spiffy glad rags from some of Limerick’s finest purveyors of fashion, raise funds for Limerick Youth Service AND have a bit of a laugh while they’re at it! One celeb, who shall remain nameless, has demonstrated his predilection for stripping down to his jocks and socks on his previous modelling jaunts!
All of the happy fundraisers are being put through their paces by one of Limerick’s most well-known model agents, Hilary Thompson. Hilary says that while there may be some diamonds in the rough among her group of talented modelling novices she is sure that her own models will be able to keep them all on the straight and narrow – and most importantly – on the runway!
Michelle McMahon of Spin South West, winner of the recent Limerick Youth Service fundraiser ‘Limerick Does Strictly Come Dancing’, is among the group along with Noel (Buddha) Healy of Munster and Shannon FRC, Labour TD Jan O’Sullivan and Brian Murray, Limerick Hurling. All are generously giving up their time to help support the work of Limerick Youth Service.
Well-known local actor and director - and now celeb model - Myles Breen recently visited Limerick Youth Service to see the work undertaken there for himself. ‘I’m so impressed,’ he says. ‘Like many, I know the Service from simply passing by from time to time but it’s only when you come through the doors that you really get a true impression of what the Service does. It’s a hive of activity between all the learners who are taking part in the various projects, the students in their classrooms and the youth workers flying around meeting young people from all the various youth clubs throughout the city and county. I am really glad to be helping support such a wonderful local resource for the young people of Limerick.’
The clothes for this fashion event of the season are being supplied by a range of shops from Limerick city and county – and from Charleville, Co Cork and include Isobels, Bella Sola, Imasa, Amee’s, Butterscotch, In Vogue, Sinead’s, Katey Jane’s, Gretta Gibbs, Sedudza, Pamela Scott’s, Helene Modes, Tony Connolly’s and Jack & Jones with shoes by Shoe Flair and hair by Niall Colgan Hairdressing.
Limerick Sporting and Celebrity Fashion Show will take place in The Sin Bin at Clohessy’s on Thursday October 8th 2009.
Catherine Kelly Director of Limerick Youth Service said, ‘I am so grateful to everyone who has given generously of their time to get this show on the road! At Limerick Youth Service, we work with over 3,000 young people through our education and vocational training programmes, community based youth projects, youth cafés and support of over 40 volunteer-led youth clubs throughout the city and county. In these straitened times we have had our funding dramatically reduced, and have a number of projects due to run out of funding altogether so we have to ask the generous people of Limerick to help us.’
Organiser Dave Dineen said, ‘As a proud Limerick man and with two young boys of my own I am determined that Limerick Youth Service will continue to be able to provide the vital services and programmes for the young people of Limerick. Not wishing to use a hackneyed phrase but nothing says it better than our young people are our future. If we don’t invest in them then what kind of a community will we have in years to come? It’s all about Limerick people supporting Limerick. Every penny will stay in Limerick and there’s every possibility we’ll have a lot of fun along the way!’
Tickets cost €20 and are available at Limerick Youth Service on Glentworth Street and at the Specsavers stores in Cruises Street and the Crescent Shopping Centre.

Youthfest 09 - 26th September; The Peoples Park - update
Limerick Youth Service is hosting Limerick’s first ever Youth Fest on Saturday 26th September in the People’s Park. A drug and alcohol-free event, it has been organised by many of the young people who attend Lava Java’s Youth Café at Limerick Youth Service, along with various other projects there. It is supported by AIB’s Better Ireland Programme and the Mid West Regional Drugs Taskforce. Other supporting partners include Limerick City Council which provided the venue and Limerick City Sports Partnership which is overseeing the sporting component of the day.
One of the organisers, Tanya O’Sullivan, youth worker with Limerick Youth Service says, ‘The Youth Fest came about because so many young people felt that there simply wasn’t an event that they could go to locally where they could get together and have some fun. Many are too young to go to the bigger festivals like the Electric Picnic and Oxegen so Limerick Youth Fest is aimed specifically at 13 to 19 year olds. It will provide all the fun of these big occasions but will be drug and alcohol-free.’
The event will run from 2.00pm to 6.00pm and will feature a number of local bands performing throughout the day. There will also be lots of workshops including drumming, Tai Chi, art and crafts and a good old fashioned sports day that will include favourites such as sack and three legged races.
It will be an event to remember as we celebrate with the theme “Youth through the Generations” with a number of tents that will display all kinds of memorabilia from the ‘70s through to the present day. Limerick’s Animal Welfare and Amnesty International will have a presence at Youth Fest. A bouncy castle and sumo suits will provide some opportunities for fun. There will alos be dance workshops, DJs showcasing their talents along with local radio broadcasts. The highlight of the event will be an attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record for the fastest egg and spoon race over 100 metres!
Admission to participation in the day’s activities is free and everyone between the ages of 13 and 19 is welcome! The aim of the organisers is to make this an annual event that will grow to takes its place in the calendar of festivals.
For more information please contact Tania O’Sullivan on 061 412 444.
